Updated 27 March 2024
PREGNANCY WARNING LABELS
Pregnancy Warning Labels Are Mandatory In Australia On All Stock Labelled After 31 July 2023.
The Key Points
The Pregnancy Warning Labels must be reproduced in red and black. The colour of the red is not specified, but the downloadable labels use the following specifications:
PMS 485 (Pantone Coated) and Black
CMYK (6, 98, 100, 1) and (0, 0, 0, 100)
For all applications, there must be a clear space of 3 mm around the Label.
There are 4 different forms of the Pregnancy Warning Label:
Type 1 – For bottles between 200 ml and 800 ml.
Type 2 – For bottles over 800 ml.
Type 3 – For outer packaging that is displayed to the consumer, where the contents is over 200 ml. And for outer packaging that is displayed to the customer where there is more than one bottle per package, irrespective of size.
Type 4 – For bottles less than 200 ml and outer packaging of bottles less than 200 ml, when there is only one bottle per package.
You can download the full suite of labels, below, along with a document summarising all the mandatory dimensions.
ALLERGEN DECLARATIONS
The requirements for allergen declarations have been updated as follows:
‘Preservative (220) Added’ is to be replaced with ‘Contains Sulphites’. Note that this applies even when zero sulphur has been added, if there are quanitifiable levels of sulphur dioxide in the wine.
Allergen declarations are required on all wines where Egg or Milk product has been used in production. There is no prescribed phrasing, but the words ‘Egg’ and ‘Milk’ are mandatory, if appropriate. Phrases such as the following are considered acceptable (substitute Milk as appropriate):
‘Produced with Egg, traces may remain.’
‘May contain Egg.’
If no Egg or Milk has been used then no declaration is required.
No declaration is required for Fish product, e.g. isinglass.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Presentation Boxes. Where a wine or spirit is sold to the consumer in a presentation box/carton/tube, then all mandatory labelling requirements must be reproduced on the outer package as well as the bottle.
Front Label versus Back Label. Where an item such as the volume statement, or alcohol statement, already appears on the front label and meets all the mandatory requirements, it does not need to be reproduced on the back label as well.
