Chateau Broustet: Barsac—Sauternes

Didier Laulan is the current owner / manager of Château Saint-Marc, his family having owned the property for many gernerations. He was also the owner of the neighboring domain, Château Broustet, Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes 1855,  which he sold in 2010. Didier is a trained Oenologist and has been responsible for a remarkably consistent range of both dry and sweet wines for the last 35 years.

These two superbly sited properties adjoin each other and are located approximately one kilometre from the leading Barsac producer Chateau Climens. Both vineyards are predominately Semillon, with smaller percentages of both Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The style of sweet wines of both properties is characterised by finesse and excellent acidity, without excessive sweetness or heaviness. These are classically styled and proportioned wines that drink well and also evolve over two decades or more.

The dry white wines of Chateau Saint-Marc consist of roughly equal amounts of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. These wines are aged on lees, half in tank and half in barrel for 5 –6 months, resulting in a fresh and textured style of wine, which drinks well when young and also develops over the medium term.

This small and very progressive producer has recently started production in 100ml tubes with stelvin seal. This new and innovative packaging has been received with great acclaim within both the wine and fashion industries.

2009 Blanc Sec de Chateau Broustet
“Full golden colour, probably because the grapes for this wine are picked when at full maturity, just tipping towards over-ripeness. Besides the colour, this comes across in the lovely full palate, and exotic fruits of apricot and mango, but with (just) enough acidity to keep the mouthfeel fresh rather than heavy. The blend is 50/50 Sauvignon Semillon, with the grapes undergoing a cold soak before fermentation, and then vinified half in barrel (100% new oak) and half in stainless steel.”  90 points Jane  Anson, Decanter, Gourmet Traveller.

2005 Chateau Broustet Sauternes 375ml / 100ml
“Bright, full yellow. Perfumed aromas of peach, orange juice, mirabelle, marzipan and flowers. Sweet, fat and dense, with ripe acidity giving definition to the moderately concentrated fruit and marzipan flavors. Finishes persistent and sweet, with noteworthy life and grip and a suggestion of youthful bitterness. A suave Broustet with a light touch.” Stephen Tanzer Jul/Aug 08.
